SCBC Students Achieve Outstanding Results in the “Russian Language Day” Speech Contest
On the afternoon of June 5, the 15th “Russian Language Day” and the Russian Speech Contest “Commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the First Manned Space flight”, jointly organized by the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Guangzhou and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, was held in the Lecture Hall of the Library at GDUFS’s Baiyunshan Campus. Students from SCBC’s Department of Russian actively participated in the competition. Huang Yanming (Class of 2024) and Zhang Jin (Class of 2023) won third prize in the speech contest, while their advisors,Yan Qiuju and Dina (Russia), were recognized as Outstanding Advisors. Additionally, five students—including Pu Junyi and Li Jiayi—took the stage to perform the classic play “The Boy”, and their outstanding performance earned unanimous praise from the audience.
SCBC Holds Professor Salon of Chinese and Foreign Languages and Literature
To fully leverage the leading role of professors in academic governance and cultural dissemination, revitalize academic resources, and deepen the university’s humanistic heritage, the opening ceremony and inaugural academic session of SCBC’s Salon of Chinese and Foreign Languages and Literature were held in Classroom G107 on the afternoon of June 11. The event was jointly organized by the Office of Discipline Development and the Center for Faculty Development. SCBC Chairman Ding Xiaojun, Executive President Wang Mingyu, Assistant President Yu Weibin, as well as professors, scholars, and representatives of faculty and students attended the event.
SCBC Chairman Ding Xiaojun presented a certificate and a commemorative gift to Professor Wang Mingyu, the keynote speaker for the inaugural session.
Professor Wang Mingyu, SCBC Executive President, delivered the first academic presentation titled “A Theory of Neutral Semiotics.” Beginning with the challenges posed by the AI era to traditional semiotics, he highlighted the fusion of language symbols and visual symbols in contemporary phenomena such as “Kichiku” subculture, New Chinese-style architectural design, “Guochao (China-chic)” brand design, Tik Tok culture, and photo editing with filters, thereby raising the issue of traditional semiotics’ limited explanatory power. He analyzed core concepts such as neutral semiotics and hyper-semiotics, explored innovative applications of semiotics in fields such as artificial intelligence, cross-cultural communication, and linguistic research, compared differences in Eastern and Western semiotics research, and argued for the theory’s national characteristics and global value. He also introduced the relevant research achievements of our university’s South China Semiotics Research Center.
SCBC Students Win Multiple Awardsat the “Xuewen Cup” Film Review Competition
Recently, the 2026 Guangdong Provincial University Library “Xuewen Cup” Film Review Competition, themed “Films Inspire Thought, Ink and Brush Capture the Land,” came to a close. Shen Zifan, a student from our university’s School of Culture and Communication, won second prize for her in-depth analysis of the film “Dead to Rights”. Under the guidance of her advisor Wang Yifan, Zhu Siming from the School of Management received an Excellence Award for her review of the film “One and Only”; Liang Zining, also from the School of Management, focused on the film “Nezha 2” and won an Excellence Award. Additionally, in the newly established AIGC “Light and Shadow Innovation” track, Deng Qiaoyu and Lin Miaoting from the School of Management utilized AIGC technology to reimagine classic dialogue from “La Tête en friche”,winning the Excellence Award in the team competition for their creativity.
Organized by the Guangdong Provincial Higher Education Library and InformationWork Steering Committee, the competition leveraged the high-quality resources of university libraries. Building upon traditional film criticism, it introduced the new AIGC “Light and Shadow Innovation” track to explore the integrated application of AI technology in film appreciation and artistic creation. Since its launch in January 2026, the competition has seen active participation from 138 university libraries across Guangdong Province, with 5,612 valid entries submitted and 1,160 works ultimately shortlisted for the final round of judging.
SCBC Students Win Multiple Awardsat the 9th National Innovation Experience Competition for College Students
On June 7, the finals of the “9th National Innovation Experience Competition for College Students” successfully concluded at Southeast University’s Jiulonghu Campus. Thanks to their solid professional skills, outstanding innovative thinking, and excellent practical achievements, SCBC students stood out through multiple stages—including on-campus selection, regional evaluations, and national semifinals. Ultimately, Zhao Leyi, a Class of 2025 Computer Science and Technology student from the School of Computer Science, won national first prize; several teams won provincial first, second, and third prizes in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area competition. A number of faculty members were recognized as Outstanding Advisors. Organized by the Chinese Society of Creationand hosted by Southeast University, the competition attracted students from more than 500 universities nationwide to compete.
SCBC Holds “Understanding Contemporary China” College English Speech Contest
On the afternoon of June11, the finals of the 19th “Nanguo Cup” ·“Understanding Contemporary China” College English Speech Contest and the 3rd “College English Cup” Learning Community Showcase successfully concluded in the International Academic Lecture Hall of Building H. The event was organized by theDepartment of College English Teaching and hosted by the Nanguo CEO College English Society. SCBC Vice President Guo Guihang was present to offer guidance, and members of the university’s LeadingGroup for the “Learn, Speak and Use English Anytime and Anywhere” initiative, along with more than 200 faculty and students from across the campus, witnessed our students express their youthful insights in English under the theme “Hundred-Flower Garden of Civilization, China in Full Bloom.”
Centered on the English speech contest and complemented by the “College English” Learning Community Showcase, the event offered a competition that blended the charm of language, cultural depth, and youthful vitality. Since the preliminary round of the speech contest began, more than 2,500 contestants had registered. Following a video-based semi-final selection process, 71 contestants advanced to the re-evaluation round, and ultimately, 17 contestants stood out to reach the finals. The finals consisted of three segments: impromptu speech, prepared speech with Q&A, and on-the-spot speech. A total of one Grand Prize, two First Prizes, seven Second Prizes, and seven Third Prizeswere awarded.
SCBC Signs an MOU with Yarmouk University in Jordan
Recently, SCBC successfully signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Yarmouk University in Jordan. Based on equality and mutual trust, the two universities will engage in systematic cooperation across multiple areas, including faculty and student exchanges, academic collaboration, and joint research, working together to advance the internationalization of higher education.
